Joshua Gilbert (b. 1995) is a photographer based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His relationship with photography began during his collegiate studies in music and has thus been shaped by the pursuit of both disciplines. The crux of his interest lies in communication that goes beyond the spoken or written word, taking a form that requires deeper responsibility of engagement from the recipient.

Today, his photographic practice utilizes evocative black and white imagery in both analog and digital mediums to explore themes of connection, solitude, and humanity’s search for spiritual fulfillment. Drawing from the unposed flow of life and intertwined with imagination, the work employs a poetic tone that slips beyond pure documentation and points to the metaphorical and symbolic.
